INSPECT for the inspection of nuclear equipment

An online remote dosimetry system based on fibre optics to inspect nuclear equipment and infrastructure

Experimental validation of the INSPECT online remote dosimeter prototype using OSL-FO on pilot sites.

The INSPECT prototype was developed by the IRESNE Nuclear Technology Department (DTN) teams. It is an online remote dosimetry system based on optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and fibre optics (FO) used to inspect nuclear equipment and infrastructure within the scope on clean-up & dismantling. It offers an alternative solution to conventional dosimetry systems (gamma cameras, semi-conductor sensors, Geiger-Muller detectors, etc.) within the context of conducting operations in environments that are difficult to access, such as pipes and vessels.

In addition to testing and validating the INSPECT device under real experimental and potentially contaminating or irradiating conditions in the Marcoule pilot unit (APM), the G1 graphite-gas reactors and the Phebus reactor, these projects have provided specific added value to each facility having taken part in the experiment. The device has helped to: consolidate measurements of the APM vessels using miniature Geiger-Muller and cadmium -zinc-telluride (CZT) detectors, validate input data for the future G1 control rod removal and sampling project, and establish the radiological conditions in the Phebus reactor pits.
